News: Appeal from Radio 5 Live
Current Headlines

So many men have now lost their lives fighting in Afghanistan. Often the news is about number of casualties or equipment, and so seldom about these brave men and the people they have left behind.

Victoria Derbyshire from BBC Radio 5 Live would like to hear about these soldiers from the people who loved them dearly - the wives, fiancées and girlfriends.

News: GLamour Magazine - Tribute to the Fallen
Current Headlines

Hello, my name is Emma Elms and I work for Glamour magazine, the UK's leading women's magazine.

We would very much like to publish a tribute piece to the young soldiers who have died in Afghanistan within the past couple of months.  We would like to speak to the wives, mothers or girlfriends of several of the men who have died, for a first person feature written in their own words, paying tribute to the loved ones they have lost.

Anyone wishing to take part can contact me on emmaelms@fastmail.fm or by phone on 07976 742803 for more information.  Many thanks for your time.

Gurkhas win right to settle in UK
Current Headlines

All Gurkha veterans who retired before 1997 with at least four years' service will be allowed to settle in the UK, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has said.   Ms Smith told MPs she was "proud to offer this country's welcome to all who have served in the brigade of Gurkhas".

It comes after a high-profile campaign by Joanna Lumley and other supporters of Gurkha rights - and an embarrassing Commons defeat for the government.  Some 36,000 Gurkhas who left before 1997 had been denied UK residency. Ms Lumley, the actress who has been the public face of the campaign on behalf of the Gurkhas, said: "This is the welcome we have always longed to give."

Victoria McMillan, 21 years of age, a young mum and a law student from Aberdeen is doing the Loch Ness 10K run on the 4th October 2009. She is raising funds for Combat Stress, a charity close to her and many hearts.

Combat Stress has never been busier – there has been a 66% increase in the number of new Veterans seeking their help over the last four years. The demand on their services is unlikely to decrease over the short to medium term and the pressure on their very modest resources is growing.
